…and a chicken fell from heaven
August 3rd, 2009 by blackbirdwhen he first saw her
he wanted to steal her
he wanted her to look his way
he wanted
her
he wanted to call her
but she had no name
no ndn name
so
nothing to say to her
what do you say to a woman with no name
so
he watched her
she seemed to be making something
making a change
making a big plan
making a world tour
making a name
her name
so
last night came and went
he had put on his regalia
his chicken regalia
and he started to dance for her
he shuffled
he turned
he ducked
and shuffled
and lifted his foot
and turned
and strutted
left, right
and turned
and strutted
he
stomped the ground
he stomped
spun and turned
ran
zig zagged
and stopped
he stomped and strutted
in place
strutting in place
he kicked up dust
he turned
to look for her
he danced and danced
a tornado
he spun
and strutted
into the sky
high up into the ndn sky
into ndn heaven
his bustle turned to gold
and his moccasins
sparkled with diamond butterfly beadwork
his eagle feather fans
carried him to a cloud
during the eulogy
she said he had some moves
it’s what she liked about him
he looked down
from his ndn cloud
he asked an old ndn angel beside him
who said that?
the old ndn angel said he didn’t know
and we might never know
just then he fell from the sky
he dusted himself off
no more golden bustle or diamond moccasins
then he heard her laugh
and remembered why he started dancing

laughter is good medicine…. i just love this poem.
