bro’Town: APTN Premieres New Zealand’s “Aboriginal ‘South Park’”

It’s been called “The Aboriginal South Park.”

It’s not at all politically correct and it’s not like anything you’ve probably seen before.

You can see this international phenom starting this October on Canada’s APTN.

What am I talking about, you ask?

bro’Town.

Never heard of it? You will, and you will plenty. bro’Town is the animated series from New Zealand about five Samoan teenagers growing up on the streets of Auckland. Since being premiered in 2004, the series has earned critical high-fives, armfuls of international television awards and a loyal cadre of fans from Australia, South America and soon to be, Canada.

This show, if you take a look at several of its trailers, is clearly not for the kiddies. The language is crude, the subject matter, as they say, “mature.” But more than just a few guffaws, bro’Town offers a satirical look at what it’s like to be an indigenous minority in Auckland, home to the world’s largest Polynesian population. Each episode, produced by Firehouse Films, takes up to six months to create with 16,000 drawings—and is authentically Samoan in style and vernacular.

APTN scored the North American coup of premiering the series, which will air its first episode Wednesday, October 4. If you can, tune in. And if you can’t, well, looks like you’re just going to have to check out the bro’Town and APTN websites to get your fix and see several short clips from previous episodes. And write and lobby our cable providers south of the border.

  1. Since most of us don’t get APTN, let us know how it holds up when it goes on the air.
